there are two characters in the game. one is a young soldier (you, in other words) that has been given the title of "red pepe." the other is a woman that you see some times in the story. she's pearl's father and your commanding officer, so he's not just a woman that you see occasionally - he's a surrogate dad.

once you've got over that hurdle, the game kicks into high gear. the story is presented in a linear fashion, with a series of "missions" that you must complete in order to unlock the next mission. but there are a handful of cutscenes, and they're beautifully presented. they're worth the price of the game alone.
there's a bunch of cool things about the game that make it worth it's price of admission alone. if i was to name one of them, it would be the missions. they're really good. you get to play as the us marines or the japanese and you get to fly, fight, and shoot your way through a bunch of unique environments. there are a handful of ships, and planes, and the game has you take on a ton of missions. there's one where you have to fight through a rainstorm to rescue a fighter pilot who's been shot down. and one where you have to sneak through a base and find a stash of churchill tanks.
when you're in a mission, you're often forced to make split-second decisions. the game has a time limit, but there's not much to do to mess with it. so you need to choose your actions wisely and do them quickly. sometimes you have to make a decision that will lead to a fight - like when you're running through an enemy base and you have to choose whether to go this way or that way, or when you're in a dogfight and you have to choose whether to fire your machine gun or your cannon. there's no time for deliberation.
